How Do Fish Help?

Healthy tilapia thrive in our tank.

To work efficiently, your Aquaponics System requires fish to provide the essential nutrients for your vegetables and fruits. If you do not want to eat your fish, “gift” them to friends or family, sell them to restaurants or local stores, or simply enjoy them as pets. Some species and individual fish last for years!

Our Aquaponic Systems utilize Tilapia, the most popular fish for culture in the world. They are fast-growing (reaching 1 to 1 ½ pounds, or 11” in about 7 months), extremely disease resistant, and provide firm, white boneless fillets (approximately 40% by weight). The feed conversion rate for Tilapia is excellent, with one pound of feed yielding one pound of fish.

The best Tilapia to use are California Hybrid Tilapia…legal in the State of California (because they can’t produce offspring in rivers and streams), and they use their energy to grow instead of breed. Check with your local Fish and Game Department regarding restrictions (if any) on Tilapia. The system will also work using nearly any fresh, warm-water fish that can be raised in captivity…such as koi or goldfish.

With an automatic feeder, fish flakes and mini pellets are easy to feed the juvenile fish…so you don’t have to feed them by hand 4 times per day. Once they reach about 3 inches in length, you can feed them regular Tilapia/Catfish chow purchased from a feed store or on-line.
